During the event, presenters from La Pine and the UO-based Sustainable Cities Initiative (an applied think tank that coordinates the Sustainable City Year Program) will highlight student contributions toward the city's goals in the areas of bicycle planning, nonprofit consulting, public relations, passive heating, economic development, community engagement, and storytelling. Members of the public are highly encouraged to participate in the event.
ABOUT THE SUSTAINABLE CITY YEAR PROGRAM
Now in its ninth year, SCYP partners University of Oregon (UO) students with an Oregon city or public agency for an academic year. The partner receives assistance with priority projects through the work of student classes across the University. The partnership with La Pine explored how this model, which has been previously implemented in larger Oregon cities, can translate to a smaller scale. Funding is being provided by the City of La Pine and The Ford Family Foundation, with an in-kind match from the UO.
ABOUT LA PINE
The City of La Pine, located in Central Oregon, is Oregon's newest city with approximately 1,800 people in the city and 17,000 in the greater La Pine area. Deschutes County residents voted to incorporate the city in late 2006.
