Phishing Emails on the rise

City constituents and area residents should be warned that phishing scams and emails are on the rise as reported by the City's IT contractor, and the Oregon Association of Municipal Recorders.

Emails are being sent that contain logo and name representation of jurisdictions such as counties and cities that appear legitimate but are scams in the making.

Please take the time to look at the email address from anything you may think is suspicious or that asks you to engage in a financial transaction. Most jurisdictions in Oregon have email addresses that end in one of the following three formats:

".or.us"

".gov"

".org"

This alone is not a guarantee against a phishing attempt, and you should pay close attention to mispellings or other usage errors in both a website address or in how the orgnaziation represents itself by name.

This public service announcement is advisory in nature only, and it is the responsibility of each individual to perform their own due diligence in clarifying the validity of any government communication. Additionally, if something appears suspect or if you have questions, reach out to the jurisdiction to deem rightfulness of the communication, billing, or request for citizen response.
